The story follows Steven Stayner, a seven-year-old boy who is abducted by a pedophile called Kenneth Parnell and held captive for seven years. During this time, Steven must cope with his new life and come to terms with the fact that he may never see his family again. However, he eventually manages to escape and reunite with his family. The film explores the psychological effects of such an ordeal and how it has shaped Steven's journey to adulthood.

Mysterious Skin is a 2004 independent drama film directed by Gregg Araki, and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Brady Corbet. The film is based on the 1995 Scott Heim novel of the same name. The film tells the story of two pre-adolescent boys, Brian Lackey and Neil McCormick, who were sexually abused by their baseball coach as children. As adults, Brian is obsessed with discovering the truth about the abuse and attempts to piece together the events of that fateful summer. Neil, on the other hand, has become a promiscuous hustler who believes he was abducted by aliens. The film follows each of the boys as they search for the truth about their past and try to make sense of their lives. Along the way, they grapple with their own sexuality, guilt, and identity. Ultimately, they both come to the realization that their past will always haunt them, but that they must move forward in order to find peace.
