To Slade, Charlie is a distraction from the painful memories of his days in the Army. The two develop a bond and Slade helps Charlie to come to terms with his past, while Charlie helps Slade to confront his future and come to terms with his disability. In a climactic moment, Slade reveals his true character and intentions to a surprised Charlie. In the end, Slade is revealed to be a far more complex character than his gruff exterior would suggest.
