After being arrested for his involvement in paramilitary activities, Sands is placed into the Maze Prison, where he and his fellow inmates are subject to the inhumane and dehumanizing conditions of the British prison system. Sands and the other inmates eventually launch a hunger strike, demanding better treatment and political recognition for their cause. As the strike progresses and its effects become more severe, Sands becomes a symbol of resistance in the eyes of the international community.
