Hunger is a British historical drama film written and directed by Steve McQueen. The film is based on the 1981 Irish hunger strike and portrays the story of Bobby Sands, a Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) volunteer who led the strike in Prison Maze, Northern Ireland. After being arrested for his involvement in paramilitary activities, Sands is placed into the Maze Prison, where he and his fellow inmates are subject to the inhumane and dehumanizing conditions of the British prison system. Sands and the other inmates eventually launch a hunger strike, demanding better treatment and political recognition for their cause. As the strike progresses and its effects become more severe, Sands becomes a symbol of resistance in the eyes of the international community.
