Young Frankenstein is a 1974 American comedy horror film directed by Mel Brooks. The film is a parody of the classic horror film genre, especially the 1931 Universal Pictures adaptation of Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein. The movie follows the descendant of the infamous Victor Frankenstein, Frederick Frankenstein (Gene Wilder), who, after inheriting his grandfather's castle in Transylvania, becomes a mad scientist and creates a monster. Frederick is accompanied by a hunchbacked assistant, Igor (Marty Feldman), and a buxom lab assistant, Inga (Teri Garr). The trio are soon joined by Frankenstein's fiancée, Elizabeth (Madeline Kahn), and the local burgomaster (Gene Hackman). The movie is filled with humor and references to classic horror films, as well as classic literature. It's a visual feast, with impeccable production design, costumes, and make-up. It's not just a parody, though; Brooks is also able to create real tension and suspense, as the characters battle monsters and attempt to create a new life. All these elements combine to make Young Frankenstein one of the greatest comedy films of all time.
