From Here to Eternity is a 1953 American drama film directed by Fred Zinnemann. The film centers around the lives of three US Army soldiers stationed in Hawaii in 1941, just prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Private First Class Robert E. Lee Prewitt (Montgomery Clift) arrives at Schofield Barracks and is assigned to Company G, which is commanded by Captain Dana Holmes (Philip Ober). Prewitt is a former professional boxer who refuses to box on the company's team, leading to tension between himself and Holmes. Meanwhile, Sergeant Milton Warden (Burt Lancaster) begins an affair with Karen Holmes (Deborah Kerr), the Captain's wife. The two must keep the relationship a secret, leading to increasing pressure as the impending attack draws closer. Through these three intertwined stories of love, friendship, and duty, From Here to Eternity provides a powerful and moving look at life in the military during a time of great uncertainty.

Mister Roberts is a 1955 comedy-drama directed by John Ford, Mervyn LeRoy, and Joshua Logan. The film is based on a novel by Thomas Heggen, and stars Henry Fonda, James Cagney, William Powell, Jack Lemmon, and Ward Bond. The story follows Lt. Douglas Roberts (Fonda) as he serves aboard a World War II cargo ship, the U.S.S. Reluctant. He and the rest of the crew must deal with a tyrannical and unsympathetic captain (Cagney), as well as the everyday boredom and routine of life at sea. Roberts dreams of being transferred to a combat duty station, but his request is continually denied by the captain. Eventually, Roberts, with the help of a friendly doctor (Powell) and a compassionate executive officer (Lemmon), is able to find a way to get his transfer. In the end, Roberts and the crew of the Reluctant are able to overcome the captain’s tyranny and win the respect of their superior officers.
