Ben-Hur is a 1959 American epic historical drama film directed by William Wyler and starring Charlton Heston in the titular role. The film tells the story of Judah Ben-Hur (Heston), a Jewish prince from Jerusalem who is betrayed and falsely accused of treason by his adoptive brother Messala (Stephen Boyd), an officer of the Roman Empire. Stripped of his title, separated from his family and the woman he loves, Judah is sentenced to slavery and forced to endure years of hardship and suffering on a Roman galley. After a chance meeting with Jesus, Judah manages to regain his freedom and fortune, and embarks on a quest for vengeance against Messala. Along the way, he encounters a variety of characters, including his childhood friend Sheik Ilderim (Jack Hawkins) and a mysterious Roman tribune (Hugh Griffith), who help him realize the power of forgiveness and redemption. In the end, Judah is reunited with his family and his beloved, and Messala is brought to justice. The film won 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor.
