Throughout the film, George's life is shown in contrast with what could have been, and he eventually discovers the great value of his own life and the lives of his loved ones. He is able to accept his circumstances, find joy in his blessings, and be grateful for the wonderful life he has.

The film culminates with a dramatic climax in which Slade has his chance to redeem himself and Simms learns the power of self-sacrifice in the face of adversity.
