The Silence of the Lambs is a psychological horror/thriller film directed by Jonathan Demme, released in 1991 and based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Harris. It stars Jodie Foster as Clarice Starling, an FBI agent on the hunt for a serial killer nicknamed "Buffalo Bill". To gain insight into the modus operandi of the killer, Clarice must consult the brilliant and imprisoned psychiatrist-turned-cannibal, Dr. Hannibal Lecter. During their conversations, Lecter provides Clarice with invaluable insight and clues as to Buffalo Bill's identity. As the investigation intensifies, so too does Clarice's psychological vulnerability to Lecter's influence. In the end, Clarice is able to use the information Lecter has provided to capture Buffalo Bill, while also confronting and outsmarting Lecter himself. The Silence of the Lambs is regarded as one of the greatest films of all time, winning five Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Anthony Hopkins.
