The Shawshank Redemption is a 1994 American drama film written and directed by Frank Darabont, based on the 1982 Stephen King novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption. The film tells the story of Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), a banker who is sentenced to life in Shawshank State Prison for a crime he did not commit. While in prison, he meets and befriends Ellis "Red" Redding (Morgan Freeman), a convicted murderer who becomes his closest friend. Together, they form a strong bond that helps them endure the harsh conditions of prison life. Though Andy is initially beaten and abused by the other inmates, he eventually earns their respect through his knowledge and skills. With the help of Red and the other inmates, he is able to significantly improve Shawshank's library system and business practices. He also manages to clandestinely amass a fortune for himself and Red, which he uses to bribe prison officials. Andy eventually succeeds in escaping from Shawshank, and Red is later released after serving a long sentence. The two men eventually reunite and live out their lives together in freedom. The Green Mile is a 1999 American fantasy crime drama film written and directed by Frank Darabont and based on Stephen King's 1996 novel of the same name. The film is set in 1935 and tells the story of Paul Edgecomb, a prison guard on death row at Cold Mountain Penitentiary. He meets John Coffey, a mysterious prisoner with supernatural powers, who is convicted for the rape and murder of two girls. Edgecomb soon learns that Coffey possesses a miraculous healing power and discovers that Coffey is innocent of his crime. As Edgecomb and the other guards struggle with their own personal demons, Coffey's miraculous power brings a sense of hope and faith to the entire prison. As the story progresses, Edgecomb must confront his own conscience and decide whether Coffey will live or die.

As their friendship is tested, they ultimately come to realize the importance of standing by each other through thick and thin.

The film received critical acclaim, and both Bates and Caan were nominated for Academy Awards for their performances.
