The Shawshank Redemption is a 1994 American drama film written and directed by Frank Darabont, based on the 1982 Stephen King novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption. The film tells the story of Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), a banker who is sentenced to life in Shawshank State Prison for a crime he did not commit. While in prison, he meets and befriends Ellis "Red" Redding (Morgan Freeman), a convicted murderer who becomes his closest friend. Together, they form a strong bond that helps them endure the harsh conditions of prison life. Though Andy is initially beaten and abused by the other inmates, he eventually earns their respect through his knowledge and skills. With the help of Red and the other inmates, he is able to significantly improve Shawshank's library system and business practices. He also manages to clandestinely amass a fortune for himself and Red, which he uses to bribe prison officials. Andy eventually succeeds in escaping from Shawshank, and Red is later released after serving a long sentence. The two men eventually reunite and live out their lives together in freedom.
