In the film, Urbain Grandier (Oliver Reed), a priest at the fortified city of Loudun, is accused of witchcraft when he refuses to give his town to Cardinal Richelieu. After a series of demonic possessions, Grandier is put on trial and ultimately burned at the stake as a witch. The film also explores themes such as religious persecution, eroticism, and hysteria. It is a controversial film which was banned in several countries and heavily censored in others due to its graphic depiction of sex and violence. The film is considered a classic of British cinema and a milestone of experimental filmmaking.
