The Shining is a psychological horror film directed by Stanley Kubrick and based on the 1977 novel by Stephen King. It stars Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance, a frustrated writer and recovering alcoholic who takes a job as the off-season caretaker of the isolated Overlook Hotel in the Colorado Rockies. Jack takes his wife Wendy (played by Shelley Duvall) and son Danny (played by Danny Lloyd) with him. Danny has psychic abilities, which he calls "the shining." He uses these abilities to experience visions of the hotel's past, during which a previous caretaker murdered his wife and daughters. Jack slowly descends into madness as he is influenced by the hotel's supernatural presence. As his sanity deteriorates, Jack becomes increasingly violent, forcing Wendy and Danny to try to escape the hotel and its malicious forces. In the end, they succeed in overcoming the evil presence, while Jack dies in the hotel. The Shining is considered one of the best horror films of all time and has achieved a cult following since its release. It is hailed for its psychological depth, visual style, and unique approach to the horror genre.
