Funny Games is a 1997 Austrian psychological thriller film written and directed by Michael Haneke. It follows a family of three—Anna, Georg, and their son Georgie—who are taken hostage by two mysterious young men while on vacation. As the two men subject the family to a series of increasingly sadistic and bizarre games, the family slowly begins to realize that the two men have no intention of letting them go. The film is a commentary on the desensitization of violence in media, as well as a critique of audience complicity in violence. It is both suspenseful and thought-provoking, and has been critically acclaimed for its stark depiction of violence and its resultant moral implications.
