The Exorcist is a 1973 American horror film directed by William Friedkin, based on the 1971 novel of the same name by William Peter Blatty. The film follows Doss as he braves enemy fire and intense combat in order to save the lives of his fellow soldiers on the battlefield. Through courage and faith, he is able to demonstrate that his convictions are worth dying for.

The intense court case sparks a heated debate between Brady, a conservative Christian, and Drummond, a liberal agnostic, as the townspeople and nation follow the trial's events. In the end, Cates is found guilty, but the verdict is overturned on appeal. The film ultimately serves as an exploration of the tension between religious fundamentalism and scientific progress.
