The Seventh Seal is a 1957 Swedish drama film written and directed by acclaimed director Ingmar Bergman. Set in Sweden during the Black Death, it tells the story of a knight, Antonius Block (Max von Sydow), who returns home from the Crusades only to find his country ravaged by the plague. He encounters Death (Bengt Ekerot) on the beach and challenges him to a game of chess. As they play, Block and his squire Jöns (Gunnar Björnstrand) embark on a journey through medieval Sweden in search of an understanding of life and death, encountering a variety of characters along the way. With powerful and thought-provoking imagery and a unique and memorable score, The Seventh Seal is one of the most acclaimed films of all time and is considered one of Bergman's greatest works.
