As the film progresses, reality and fantasy become blurred, and secrets are slowly uncovered. As the two women confront their fears and desires, they come to realize the true nature of the dreamlike world they inhabit.

The film follows Craig Schwartz (John Cusack), a struggling street puppeteer who finds a secret portal that leads into the mind of actor John Malkovich (playing himself). After discovering the portal, Craig sets up a business where people can pay to experience being John Malkovich for fifteen minutes. As the business gathers momentum, Craig’s wife, Lotte (Cameron Diaz), discovers the portal and starts using it to explore what it feels like to be a man. Meanwhile, Maxine (Catherine Keener), a co-worker at Craig’s office, develops a crush on him and attempts to use the portal to get closer to him. As the film progresses, Craig and Lotte’s marriage starts to unravel as they both become more obsessed with the portal. In the end, Craig and Lotte use the portal to be together, while Maxine is left alone.

Get Out was a box office success and was widely praised for its subversion of traditional horror tropes and its exploration of contemporary racial issues.
