Jaws is a 1975 American suspense/horror film directed by Steven Spielberg. The film follows police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) as he attempts to protect the citizens of Amity Island from a great white shark. After several attacks, Brody teams up with a marine biologist (Richard Dreyfuss) and a professional shark hunter (Robert Shaw) to hunt down the shark. As they search the waters, tension mounts as the trio attempt to stay one step ahead of the predator. Ultimately, they must confront their fears and risk their lives to save Amity Island.

The Abyss is a 1989 science fiction film directed by James Cameron and starring Ed Harris, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, and Michael Biehn. The film follows a group of deep-sea oil drillers as they encounter a mysterious underwater alien race while trying to recover a sunken nuclear submarine. After initial hostility, the aliens help the humans avert a global nuclear disaster while they both learn to trust and understand each other. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture. It was also nominated for five Saturn Awards, including Best Science Fiction Film and Best Actor for Ed Harris. The movie was a box office success, grossing over $90 million worldwide at the time of its release.
