The story involves a complicated plot by two professional grifters to con a criminal mob boss. The pair stages a fake poker game to bring the mob boss to them, then conning him out of a large sum of money. Along the way, they have to outwit both the mob boss and the police. The film was a huge success at the box office and was the winner of seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

The film explores themes of loyalty, justice, and morality, and has been praised for its realistic portrayal of the criminal underworld.
