Ben-Hur is a 1959 American epic historical drama film, directed by William Wyler and starring Charlton Heston in the title role. The film tells the story of Judah Ben-Hur, a Jewish prince from Jerusalem, who is enslaved by the Romans at the beginning of the 1st century and becomes a charioteer and a Christian. After years of slavery and an epic sea battle, Judah is finally reunited with his family and his childhood friend, Messala. With the help of his childhood friend, Sheik Ilderim, Judah takes part in a chariot race to win his freedom and revenge against Messala. Judah ultimately triumphs over his former friend in an emotional climax and is reunited with his family. The film was a major commercial and critical success, winning 11 Academy Awards in 1960 including Best Picture and Best Actor.
