The film tells the story of the behind-the-scenes negotiations between Walt Disney and British author P.L. Travers that resulted in the 1964 classic Mary Poppins. The film begins in 1961 with a meeting between Walt Disney and P.L. Travers in which Disney attempts to persuade the author to grant him the rights to her novel, Mary Poppins. Despite her initial reluctance, Travers concedes to a two-week trip to Los Angeles for a series of meetings with Disney and his creative team. During their meetings, Travers reveals some of the personal history that inspired her story and Disney's creative team struggle to satisfy her demands. The film then moves back in time to 1906, when Travers, then a young girl, lived in London with her family and experienced the joys and traumas that would eventually become part of her book. As the story progresses, Travers grows closer to Disney and eventually finds the courage to overcome her past and allow her book to become the classic film it is today.
