It tells the story of an unnamed narrator, played by Edward Norton, who is suffering from insomnia and meets a soap salesman, Tyler Durden, played by Brad Pitt. The two form an underground fight club where men come to fight each other in order to feel more alive. As the club's popularity grows, so does the narrator's obsession with Tyler, and their bond leads to the creation of a terrorist organization known as "Project Mayhem," whose violent activities spiral out of control. As the narrator attempts to regain control and protect the people he loves, he is forced to confront his own destructive desires. The film examines themes of masculinity, nihilism, and consumerism, and is renowned for its cinematography, art direction, and editing.

The film follows the true story of Christopher McCandless (Emile Hirsch), a young man from a wealthy family who gives away his savings, abandons his possessions, and hitchhikes across America in an effort to explore the wilderness and experience life outside of the comforts of modern society. Along his journey, he makes friends with a variety of people and finds himself in a number of unexpected situations, including a romantic relationship with a woman he meets. Ultimately, however, McCandless's journey leads him to the Alaskan wilderness, where he is eventually found dead, having succumbed to starvation. The film culminates with McCandless's family and friends reflecting on his life and legacy.

Aided by the ambitions of network executive Diana Christensen (Faye Dunaway) and her attempt to create a new type of exploitative news, Beale's ratings skyrocket and he is transformed into a prophet of sorts. As his mental state begins to deteriorate, he is taken advantage of and manipulated by the executives of the network, while they use his popularity to further their agenda. The film explores the power of the media and its role in shaping public opinion and exploiting the human condition. It is a powerful and thought-provoking exploration of mass media and its effects on society.

The film also features a variety of supporting characters, including Foster's ex-wife, his daughter, and Prendergast's partner, Sergeant Prendergast. The film is an examination of the breakdown of society and the individual when faced with life's everyday pressures.
