Halloween is a 1978 American independent slasher horror film directed and scored by John Carpenter, co-written with producer Debra Hill, and starring Donald Pleasence and Jamie Lee Curtis in her film debut. The film tells the story of a mental patient, Michael Myers, who returns home to the fictional town of Haddonfield, Illinois, fifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween night when he was six-years-old. Myers stalks and killing teenagers and other residents while Dr. Sam Loomis, Myers' psychiatrist, tries desperately to track and stop him. The film established many of the tropes present in slasher films, and is credited with successfully popularizing the genre. It helped to build and shape the careers of both Carpenter and Curtis, and has had a lasting impact on the film and horror industry. It has spawned numerous sequels and remakes, making it one of the most successful independent films of all time.
