The Wizard of Oz is a 1939 American musical fantasy film based on the 1900 novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, written by L. Frank Baum. The film follows Dorothy Gale, a young farmgirl from Kansas who is swept away to the magical land of Oz in a tornado. With the help of her new friends the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion, she embarks on a journey to find the Wizard of Oz in order to have him grant her wish of returning home. Along the way, she battles the Wicked Witch of the West and her minions in order to protect her newfound friends. The film has become an iconic piece of cinema and is widely considered to be one of the greatest films of all time.
