Wake in Fright is a 1971 Australian thriller/drama directed by Ted Kotcheff. The film follows John Grant (Gary Bond), a schoolteacher who has been assigned to a remote outback town for six months. Desperate to leave, he takes a small loan from a local pub and boards a train, only to find out that he is stranded in the small town of Bundanyabba due to the train being cancelled. John is soon introduced to the wild, alcohol-fueled, and violent lifestyle of the townspeople. After reluctantly joining in on the debauchery, he falls deeper and deeper into a self-destructive cycle of gambling and drinking, putting him in a dangerous situation. In the end, John must find a way to escape the town and regain his dignity.
