Saw is a 2004 psychological horror film directed by James Wan and written by Leigh Whannell. The film centers around two men, Adam Stanheight (Elwes) and Dr. Lawrence Gordon (Glover), who are abducted and placed in a deadly game by a mysterious serial killer known as Jigsaw. Adam and Dr. Gordon must find a way to escape the game or die trying. Along the way, they will find out the truth about Jigsaw's motives as well as uncover a sinister secret that could cost them their lives. As the film progresses, Jigsaw's cohort, Amanda (Potter), begins to manipulate the two men and their surroundings to further Jigsaw's plan. The film was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $103 million and receiving generally positive reviews. Its success spawned a franchise of sequels and video games.

Battle Royale is a Japanese dystopian action horror film directed by Kinji Fukasaku and based on the 1999 novel of the same name by Koushun Takami. The film takes place in a near-future Japan, where an authoritarian government has created an annual program in which a class of junior high school students are sent to a deserted island and forced to battle each other to the death in a televised "Survival Program.” The students must fight against one another in a series of violent and gruesome games in order to be the last one standing, and the winner will be allowed to live. The film follows the story of a small group of students who choose to fight back against the oppressive system, while also exploring themes of friendship, loyalty, betrayal, and survival.
