The Killing Fields is a 1984 British drama film about the Cambodian genocide directed by Roland Joffé. It stars Sam Waterston as New York Times journalist Sydney Schanberg and Haing S. Ngor as his Cambodian friend, Dith Pran. The film follows the two men as they experience the horrors of the Khmer Rouge uprising in Cambodia during the 1970s. After Schanberg is forced to leave the country in 1975, Pran is left behind and is captured and tortured by the Khmer Rouge. Despite his suffering, Pran remains loyal to Schanberg and sends him letters and news clippings that keep him updated on the situation in Cambodia. After several years, Schanberg is finally able to return to Cambodia and reunite with Pran, who survives the genocide. The film ends with Pran and Schanberg visiting the Killing Fields, a memorial to the victims of the Khmer Rouge.
