The film follows the friendship between Aibileen Clark (Viola Davis) and Minny Jackson (Octavia Spencer), as they work together to help a young white woman, Skeeter Phelan (Emma Stone), write a book exposing the racism they and other African-American maids have experienced while working in white households. With the help of their stories, Skeeter is able to create a groundbreaking book that changes the lives of the maids, their white employers and the entire community of Jackson.

The film stars Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monáe as Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson, three African-American mathematicians who were key figures in the early days of the US space program. The film follows the trio as they face racial and gender discrimination while contributing to the success of NASA's efforts to launch a man into space. With the help of their white supervisor, Al Harrison (played by Kevin Costner), the trio helps to put the first American into orbit. The story also depicts the impact of their accomplishments on the Civil Rights Movement.
