3.5 out of 4 stars

From Robert Zemeckis, starring Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, Gary Sinise, Sally Field
Rated PG-13

Forrest Gump is a 1994 American romantic comedy-drama film directed by Robert Zemeckis and written by Eric Roth. It is based on the 1986 novel of the same name by Winston Groom. The film stars Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump, a naïve, slow-witted but kind-hearted, good-natured man from Alabama who witnesses, and in some cases influences, some of the defining events of the latter half of the 20th century in the United States. Forrest is portrayed as having surprisingly low intelligence but good intentions, naivete and a kind heart. He joins the army for service in Vietnam, finding new friends called Dan and Bubba, he wins medals, starts a successful shrimp fishing business, inspires people to jog, and starts a ping-pong craze. Despite his sub-par IQ, his strength of character and commitment to his friends and family help him to form relationships with people from all walks of life, and be present during many important moments in recent history, culminating in his being awarded the Medal of Honor. Throughout the story, Forrest teaches us the meaning of friendship, the importance of family and the power of love.
