The Great Escape is a 1963 American epic World War II adventure film directed by John Sturges and starring Steve McQueen, James Garner, and Richard Attenborough. Based on the 1950 nonfiction book of the same name by Paul Brickhill, the film is a dramatization of the mass escape of Allied prisoners of war from a German POW camp during World War II. The prisoners plan a daring and sophisticated escape, utilizing various means including digging a long tunnel and stealing German uniforms. Despite the efforts of the German guards, they are eventually successful in getting many of the prisoners out of the camp, although many are recaptured. In the end, only three make it home safely.
