It tells the story of African-American baseball player Jackie Robinson and his history-making signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers under the guidance of team executive Branch Rickey. The film focuses on the events leading up to and during Robinson's 1947 signing, as well as his subsequent 1947 rookie season. Both Robinson and Rickey must face adversity from the public, the press, and other players for Robinson to become the first black man to play in Major League Baseball. The film was a success, grossing over $95 million worldwide, and receiving numerous accolades on its release, including two Academy Award nominations for Best Original Score and Best Actor in a Leading Role for Chadwick Boseman.
