Meanwhile, Sergeant Milton Warden (Burt Lancaster) is having an affair with Karen (Donna Reed), the wife of one of his superiors, Captain Dana “Dynamite” Holmes. When Prewitt’s refusal to fight comes to a head, Warden steps in to help his friend and protect Karen from Holmes’ wrath. Ultimately, Prewitt and Maggio’s friendship is tested when Maggio is arrested for fighting with a civilian and Prewitt is forced to choose between his loyalty to Maggio and his dedication to the Army. The events that follow lead to a dramatic and powerful conclusion.

The film follows Hayes' experiences in a Turkish prison and his desperate attempts to escape. It falls into the category of prison escape films, and is also a cautionary tale about the harsh realities of a foreign prison system. Initially, the film was met with controversy due to its portrayal of the Turkish justice system, although it was ultimately a commercial success and earned six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Original Score and Best Adapted Screenplay. Midnight Express has become a cult classic and continues to receive critical acclaim.
