The Innocents is a classic horror film from 1961, directed by Jack Clayton and written by William Archibald and Truman Capote. It is based on Henry James' novella, The Turn of the Screw. The film follows the story of Miss Giddens (Deborah Kerr), a governess who is employed to look after two children, Miles and Flora, at a large country estate. As Miss Giddens gets to know the children, she slowly begins to suspect that the estate is haunted by the ghosts of two former employees, Quint and Miss Jessel. As the story develops, the governess finds herself increasingly haunted by the ghosts, and it soon becomes apparent that they are attempting to possess the children. In the end, Miss Giddens is able to save the two children from the clutches of Quint and Miss Jessel and restore peace to the estate.

With the help of a Scotland Yard detective, she discovers that Gregory has been manipulating her by dimming the gaslights in her home—hence, the term "gaslighting." In the end, Paula stands up for herself and triumphs over her cruel husband.

The film also explores themes of guilt, regret, and psychological trauma as Grace struggles to come to terms with her past.
