Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is an action-adventure film from 2003 directed by Gore Verbinski. The story follows a motley crew of swashbuckling pirates led by Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp). They are on a quest to rescue Elizabeth (Keira Knightley), the daughter of Governor Swann (Jonathan Pryce), from the cursed crew of the Black Pearl. They battle the pirate Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) and his crew of cursed undead pirates as they attempt to break the curse and free Elizabeth. Along the way, they must contend with the British Navy and the East India Trading Company. The movie has been praised for its innovative use of special effects, comedic elements, and exciting action sequences. It was a financial success, grossing over $654 million at the box office, and won several awards, including Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects and Best Makeup.
