The Princess Bride is a 1987 romantic fantasy adventure comedy film directed by Rob Reiner. It is based on the 1973 novel of the same name by William Goldman. The film stars Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, Chris Sarandon, Wallace Shawn, André the Giant, and Christopher Guest. In the film, a grandfather (Peter Falk) reads the book of the same name to his sick grandson (Fred Savage). The story is set in the fictional country of Florin and follows the story of Buttercup, a young woman of extraordinary beauty and her one true love, Westley, a farmhand. When Westley leaves to seek his fortune, Buttercup is horrified to learn that he has been killed by the Dread Pirate Roberts. She agrees to marry the evil prince Humperdinck, but instead is kidnapped by a group of three outlaws. Westley reappears alive and, with the help of his friends, sets out to rescue Buttercup from the prince's clutches.
