The Hunt for Red October is a 1990 American spy thriller film directed by John McTiernan and based on Tom Clancy's 1984 best-selling novel of the same name. The film follows Marko Ramius (Sean Connery), a Soviet submarine captain, and his crew as they attempt to defect to the United States, while being pursued by the Soviet Navy and a rogue CIA analyst (Alec Baldwin). The film also stars Scott Glenn, James Earl Jones, Sam Neill, and Tim Curry. The film follows Ramius and his crew as they set sail in a stealthy, new type of Soviet nuclear submarine called the Red October, designed to elude detection. The CIA sends Jack Ryan (Baldwin) to investigate, believing that the submarine's mission is to launch a nuclear attack on the United States. As the Soviet and American forces clash in a race to recover the secrets of the Red October, Ryan must prove that Ramius's intentions are peaceful in order to prevent a war. Along the way, he must deal with hidden agendas and the mistrust of both sides. In the end, the Red October is able to elude both the Soviets and the Americans, and Ramius and his crew escape to safety.
