The Departed is a 2006 American crime drama directed by Martin Scorsese and written by William Monahan. The film is a remake of the 2002 Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs. The film follows the lives of two men from opposite sides of the law - one a police officer and the other a criminal. While the police officer, Billy Costigan (DiCaprio), infiltrates the criminal organization of mob boss Frank Costello (Nicholson), the criminal, Colin Sullivan (Damon), infiltrates the Massachusetts State Police. As the men become increasingly entwined, a battle of wits and moral ambiguity ensues. The Departed received critical acclaim and numerous awards, including four Oscars, for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Editing. Its box office success made it the highest-grossing film of 2006. The film has since been listed in numerous publications' lists of the greatest films of all time.
