The Little Mermaid is a 1989 animated musical fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures. Based on the Danish fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen, the film tells the story of Ariel, a mermaid princess, who dreams of becoming human. With the help of a sea witch, Ariel strikes a deal with the sea’s tyrannical ruler, her father, in order to pursue her dream. Along the way, she meets a human prince, makes friends with a motley assortment of aquatic creatures, and encounters various obstacles that she must overcome to fulfill her goal. The film features the voices of Jodi Benson, Pat Carroll, Christopher Daniel Barnes, Samuel E. Wright, Kenneth Mars, Buddy Hackett, and Jason Marin. It was the 28th Disney animated feature film and won two Academy Awards for Best Original Score and Best Original Song (“Under the Sea”). It was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.
