Jaws is a 1975 American thriller film directed by Steven Spielberg and based on Peter Benchley's 1974 novel of the same name. The film stars Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, and Richard Dreyfuss. Set in Amity Island, a fictional summer resort town, the film follows police chief Martin Brody (Scheider) as he attempts to protect beachgoers from a giant great white shark by closing the beach, only to be overruled by the town council. The film also features a score composed by John Williams, which became one of the most famous and popular in film history. After several attacks on swimmers, including the death of a small boy, the town hires a professional shark hunter, Quint (Shaw), to take down the creature. With the help of marine biologist Matt Hooper (Dreyfuss), the trio sets off to hunt the shark, which soon becomes a pursuit of personal vengeance. The film is widely considered as a trendsetting classic of the horror genre and one of the most influential films of all time.
