The Exorcist is a 1973 American supernatural horror film directed by William Friedkin, based on the 1971 novel of the same name by William Peter Blatty. The film stars Ellen Burstyn, Max von Sydow, Linda Blair, Jason Miller, Lee J. Cobb, and Mercedes McCambridge. The film follows a 12-year-old girl (Linda Blair) who becomes possessed by a powerful demonic force, forcing her mother (Ellen Burstyn) to turn to Fathers Damien Karras (Jason Miller) and Lankester Merrin (Max von Sydow) for help with the increasingly dangerous possession. As they try to drive the demon out of her body, they come up against a powerful force that puts their own lives in danger. The Exorcist was a critical and commercial success, becoming the first horror film to be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. It remains one of the highest grossing horror films of all time, and is widely considered to be one of the greatest horror films ever made.
