When the former leader of the Jets, Tony (Beymer), falls in love with Maria (Wood), the sister of the leader of the Sharks, Bernardo (George Chakiris), tensions between the two gangs escalate and a rumble is planned. The film earned ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture, making it the second musical movie to do so after 1934's An American in Paris. The soundtrack, including the song "Somewhere" (sung by Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim), was also incredibly popular. West Side Story is considered to be one of the greatest musicals of all time and has been praised for its soundtrack, choreography, and innovative approach to musical film-making.
