A Man for All Seasons is a 1966 British historical drama film which tells the story of Sir Thomas More, a 16th-century Chancellor of England who refuses to sign a letter asking Pope Clement VII to annul the marriage of King Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. The film stars Paul Scofield as More, Robert Shaw as Henry VIII, Orson Welles as Wolsey, Leo McKern as Cromwell, Wendy Hiller as Alice More, Susannah York as Margaret More, and John Hurt as Richard Rich. The story follows More’s moral struggle as he attempts to remain true to his conscience despite external pressure to abandon his beliefs and follow the King’s wishes. His story serves as a metaphor for the ultimate triumph of individual conscience over state power. The film was well-received by critics and was nominated for six Academy Awards, winning Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Scofield.
