Hidden Figures is a 2016 American biographical drama film directed by Theodore Melfi and written by Melfi and Allison Schroeder. The film stars Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monáe as three African-American women working at NASA who serve as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit. The women, who had to fight against racial and gender discrimination, are eventually recognized for their crucial contributions to the Space Race. Spanning the period between 1950 and 1962, the film is based on the non-fiction book of the same name written by Margot Lee Shetterly. The film received numerous awards and nominations, including three Academy Award nominations, two Golden Globe wins, and two Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Selma is a historical drama based on the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches led by James Bevel, Hosea Williams, and Martin Luther King, Jr. (played by David Oyelowo). The film chronicles the tumultuous three-month period in 1965, when Dr. King and his followers pressed forward on an epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, in order to secure equal voting rights. Despite violent opposition, Dr. King and his followers marched in the face of danger to gain the right to vote for African Americans. The film follows the courage and faith of these everyday heroes as they risked their lives and endured physical abuse in order to change history. The film paints a vivid picture of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States and its importance in the fight for civil rights.
