A Very Long Engagement is a 2004 French romantic drama film directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. The film is set in France during World War I and follows a young woman named Mathilde (Audrey Tautou) who is searching for her fiancé, Manech (Gaspard Ulliel). Manech was sentenced to life in prison for desertion and Mathilde refuses to accept that he is gone forever. She searches for clues to find out what happened to him and embarks on a quest to uncover the truth. The film follows Mathilde as she discovers secrets and lies that have been hidden for decades. Along the way, she finds love, friendship and redemption. In the end, Mathilde finds her beloved Manech and they are reunited in a bittersweet but happy ending.
