3.3 out of 4 stars

From Charles Ferguson, starring Matt Damon, Gylfi Zoega, Andri Snær Magnason, Sigridur Benediktsdottir
Rated PG-13

Inside Job is a 2010 documentary film written, produced, and directed by Charles Ferguson, which details the rise of the 2008 financial crisis. The film explores numerous facets of the crisis, including the roles played by large financial institutions, government regulators, credit rating agencies, and academic economists. The film initially examines the deregulation of the banking industry, and how this deregulation enabled the growth of the financial industry and the 2008 subprime mortgage crisis. It then looks at the ways in which the banks and other financial institutions took advantage of their newfound freedom to build risky mortgages and financial instruments that ultimately led to the crisis. Finally, Inside Job examines the ways in which the banking industry was able to avoid accountability and to make billions in profits despite the economic collapse. Throughout, the film interweaves interviews with financial industry insiders, economists, journalists, and government officials. In the end, Inside Job argues that the 2008 crisis was the result of systemic and intentional corruption in the financial industry, and that government regulators were complicit in allowing this corruption to occur. The film won the 2010 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.
