The film tells the story of Ensign Frank Thurlowe Pulver (Lemmon), a disgruntled and insubordinate United States Navy ensign aboard the fictional USS Reluctant in the Pacific theater of World War II. The ship's captain, Lieutenant Commander Morton (Cagney), is tyrannical and long-winded in his attempts to stamp out any form of fun or pleasure from the crew. Pulver and his friend, Chief Petty Officer Doug Roberts (Fonda), a well-liked and respected member of the crew, constantly devise plans to undermine the captain's authoritarian rule. Roberts is able to successfully make the crew's life bearable, often inspiring them by his wit, good humor, and knack for getting the best out of them. The film is set on the Hawaiian island of Oahu in the months leading up to the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, and chronicles the lives of three U.S. Army soldiers as they endure the tedium of military life and grapple with their own personal issues. Corporal Robert E. Lee Prewitt (Clift) is a talented boxer who has been transferred to an army base and is assigned to an infantry unit. Private Angelo Maggio (Sinatra) is an Italian-American who is frequently the target of abuse from his higher-ranking officers and fellow soldiers. And, Sergeant Milton Warden (Lancaster) is a career soldier whose relationship with socialite Karen Holmes (Kerr) threatens to jeopardize his military career. Tora! Tora! Tora! is a 1970 Japanese-American historical war drama film that depicts the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the series of events that led up to it. The film is told from both the American and Japanese perspectives, with three directors: Richard Fleischer, Kinji Fukasaku, and Toshio Masuda, as well as Akira Kurosawa. It stars Martin Balsam, Joseph Cotten, Sō Yamamura, Jason Robards, and E.G. Marshall, among others. The movie follows the events that led up to the attack on Pearl Harbor, including the Japanese plans for the attack and their surprise when the Americans were unprepared. The film also shows the struggles the U.S. Navy and Army Air Corps had to face after the attack, as well as the military and political decisions made by both sides in the aftermath. The film was nominated for several Academy Awards, including Best Visual Effects and Best Art Direction.
