Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt), the Basterds team up with a young French cinema owner, Shosanna (Mélanie Laurent), in an attempt to take down Hitler and the Third Reich. Along the way, they must overcome overwhelming odds, including a sadistic Nazi SS officer, Colonel Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz). The film ultimately ends with a massive shootout at a movie theater where Shosanna has arranged for Hitler and his top officers to be in attendance. Through their actions, The Basterds succeed in assassinating Hitler and the Nazi leaders, ultimately leading to the end of the war.

The film follows a group of U.S. soldiers stationed in Hawaii in the months leading up to the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. U.S. Army Private Robert E. Lee Prewitt (Clift) is an excellent bugler and boxer, but he refuses to join the regimental boxing team on principle. The commander of the post, Sergeant Milton Warden (Lancaster), struggles to keep Prewitt in line while also dealing with his own feelings for the post's head nurse, Karen Holmes (Kerr). Meanwhile, Private Angelo Maggio (Sinatra) is abused and harassed by his own commanding officer, Sergeant 'Fatso' Judson (Borgnine). After Maggio retaliates by insulting Judson, the sergeant punishes him by putting him on fatigues for a month, an act that leads to Maggio's eventual death. The film culminates with the attack on Pearl Harbor, and the fate of the characters in its aftermath.

Ultimately, Hughes’ life and career are cut short by his mental illness, but his legacy lives on.
