With the doctor's help, Merrick is able to stay in the hospital and gain some level of peace and acceptance. The film follows Merrick's efforts to cope with his condition, and the efforts of those around him to help him.

The Nightmare Before Christmas is a 1993 American stop-motion animated musical dark fantasy film directed by Henry Selick and produced and conceived by Tim Burton. It tells the story of Jack Skellington, the King of "Halloween Town" who stumbles through a portal to "Christmas Town" and becomes obsessed with the idea of presenting his own Christmas holiday. He attempts to enlist Santa Claus's help, but his efforts cause confusion and chaos. The film stars the voices of Chris Sarandon, Catherine O'Hara, William Hickey, Ken Page, and Paul Reubens. The film was met with critical and financial success, grossing over $76 million during its initial theatrical release. It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects and the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation. It was reissued in Disney Digital 3-D in 2006. It also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects, making it the first stop-motion film to receive an Academy Award nomination. It has since been recognized as a cult classic.

The movie follows Bateman's descent into insanity as he becomes obsessed with killing and torturing those around him. As the movie progresses, his obsession leads to chaos and destruction around him, leaving the audience in suspense as to what will happen next.
