Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… and Spring is a 2003 South Korean film directed by Kim Ki-duk. The movie follows a Buddhist monk and his pupil as they go through a cycle of life, representing each season. The film begins in a small floating monastery in the middle of a lake that is home to an elderly Buddhist master and his young apprentice. In spring, the boy is born and the master teaches him the Buddhist way of life. In summer, the boy is a mischievous adolescent and rebels against his master’s teachings. In fall, the master sends the boy away and he falls into a life of crime. In winter, the boy returns to the monastery a changed man, humbled and repentant. Finally, in spring, the old man dies, leaving the boy to take on the role of master and continue the cycle of life. The movie is a moving look at the cycle of life, death and rebirth, and the search for enlightenment.
