The Little Mermaid is a 1989 American animated romantic fantasy musical film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures. It is based on the Danish fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen. The film follows mermaid princess Ariel, who dreams of becoming human and falls in love with the handsome prince Eric. With the help of her crab friend Sebastian, Ariel strikes a deal with the evil sea witch Ursula to become human for three days. She must win Eric's love within those three days or forfeit her soul to Ursula. As Ariel embarks on her journey, she faces numerous obstacles such as her confusing feelings for Eric and Ursula's devious schemes. The Little Mermaid features Alan Menken's Academy Award-winning score and songs such as "Part of Your World", "Under the Sea", and "Kiss the Girl". The film was a critical and commercial success, grossing $211 million in the box office and becoming the first Disney animated feature film to generate an Oscar nomination for Best Picture.
