The Shining is a horror movie directed by Stanley Kubrick and released in 1980. It stars Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance, a novelist who is hired as the off-season caretaker of the isolated Overlook Hotel in the Colorado Rockies. Torrance arrives at the hotel with his wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall) and son Danny (Danny Lloyd), who is gifted with "the shining", an array of psychic abilities that allow him to see the hotel's horrific secrets and the ghosts that haunt it. Jack's stay at the hotel gradually uncovers his own inner demons and he descends into madness. He becomes increasingly violent and desperate, and the family is trapped in the hotel with no way to escape. As his sanity slips away, Jack's attempts to murder Wendy and Danny become more and more likely, leading to a thrilling climax as they attempt to flee the hotel before Jack can do them any harm.
