Beauty and the Beast is a 1991 American animated musical romantic fantasy film directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise. It is the thirtieth animated feature produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and was released by Walt Disney Pictures. It is based on the French fairy tale of the same name by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont. The film tells the story of a prince who is transformed into a monster and his attempt to become human once again. In order to break the spell, he must learn to love and be loved in return. The film focuses on the relationship between the Beast and the beautiful young woman Belle, who he imprisons in his castle. In the process, the two of them find out that true beauty lies within. The film features the voices of Robby Benson, Paige O'Hara, Richard White, Jerry Orbach, Angela Lansbury and David Ogden Stiers. The film was a critical and commercial success, becoming the first animated film to gross over $200 million at the US box office and winning two Academy Awards. The soundtrack, which features music composed by Alan Menken, went on to become a best-selling album, selling over 25 million copies worldwide.
